In a pre-study, concerning roundwood freshness, performed by the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden during the spring of 2000, the quality on the forest road network was identified as a major problem for the Swedish forest sector. These problems mostly occur during spring thaw, but also when rains give muddy gravel roads. The Swedish forest company Holmen Skog decided to support the PhD project presented here with harvest and road data from a forest district, and expert knowledge of road investments. Upgrading of forest roads has been studied in a major part of this thesis, with two case studies at a forest district of average size located around Sveg in Härjedalen. Deterministic scenario analysis has been used and compared to a two-stage stochastic model. Cost functions, assortment mixtures and scenarios have been analysed, and results have been evaluated together with the staff at Holmen Skog. These case studies indicate that the problem can swiftly be solved, at least at average size forest districts. In the last paper a model of the roundwood supply chain is developed and tested via a sample problem. The problem is restricted to the supply chain with fixed harvesting and fixed demand at the mills. The considered uncertainty is load-bearing capacity on the road network, which depends on the water content in the road body and the bearing layer quality. In contrast to the road investment which are long-term decisions, this planning problem is short-term, and in our paper between half a year and one year. One difficult part in this model is the estimation of storage costs. This study, therefore, puts forward the need of measurements of storage costs. Otherwise, it is not possible to optimise the roundwood supply chain in a consistent way. Storage costs should, for that reason, be analysed in the future.

Global Supply Chain Management under Carbon Emission Trading Program Using Mixed Integer Programming and Genetic Algorithm
In this paper, the transportation problem under the carbon emission trading program ismodelled by mathematical programming and genetic algorithm. Since green supply chain issuesbecome important and new legislations are taken into account, carbon emissions costs are included inthe total costs of the supply chain. The optimisation model has the ability to minimise the total costsand provides the ...

Competition for woody biomass between material and energy uses is expected to further increase in the future, due to the limited availability of forest resources and increasing demand of wood for material and bioenergy. Currently, methodological approaches for modeling wood production and delivery costs from forest to industrial gates are missing. This study combines forest engineering, geograp...

The use of supply chain management and optimisation is of increasing importance in the forest industry. The overall wood-flow starts with standing trees in forests and continues with harvesting, bucking, sorting, transportation to terminals, sawmills, pulp mills, paper mills and heating plants, conversion into products such as pulp, paper, lumber, and ends at different customers. Many planning ...

Emergency departments (EDs) have been becoming increasingly congested due to the combined impacts of growing demand, access block and increased clinical capability of the EDs. This congestion has known to have adverse impacts on the performance of the healthcare services. Attempts to overcome with this challenge have focussed largely on the demand management and the application of system wide p...
متن کاملAn integrated Decision-Making Approach for Road Transport Evaluation in a Sustainable Supply Chain
One important step to achieve a sustainable transportation system is to control the impact and evaluate the effect of various influencing factors toward three dimensions of sustainability. Within this context, diverse analytical approaches have been developed to assess the sustainability level of various transportation systems, however, sustainability evaluation based on fuzzy multiple criteria...
